The Dutch national cricket team failed to continue their success at the World Twenty20 on Tuesday, when it lost to Pakistan by 82 runs.

Four days after their historic win against England, the Dutch did not manage to qualify for the final eight in the tournament. Instead Pakistan, which found itself in peril after a beating from England, displayed the professional and clinical bowling needed to kill the Dutch world champion aspirations. The Netherlands would have moved on with a loss of up to 58 runs, because it could qualify based on run rate.

Led by fast bowler Dirk Nannes, the Dutch didn't do too badly, giving Pakistan 175-5 in their innings. But the Dutch batting was poor. Pakistani spin bowlers Shahid Afridi (4-11) and Kamran Akmal (3-19) bowled them out for 93.

"We didn't play that well today," Netherlands captain Jeroen Smits told Sky Sports. "Afridi was outstanding. That's what we said in the morning: We had to fear Afridi and to play him straight, but I think that's not what we did. Our bowling was okay but (the total) was too much for us."

"It's a privilege to be here. Unfortunately, we didn't make it through to the Super 8s, but I think we made an impact on Friday night (when the Dutch beat England)," Smits said.
